In-Person Reiki Session
You will meet with your Reiki practitioner for a few minutes to discuss how you're doing, what concerns you may have, and whether there is anything specific you would like to focus on in your session. This is up to you; it is not necessary for your practitioner to know what your situation is. The practitioner is not there to diagnose, and Reiki goes where it is needed (and not always where the client expected!).
Yes, you leave your clothes on. It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing, and that you remove your shoes. You will typically lie on a massage table, though it is also possible to receive Reiki while seated in a chair. You can request a blanket if you wish.
I encourage you to set an intention for your session because energy goes where your mind tells it to go. Great options for intentions are relaxation, clarity and healing. Reiki will also go where it is needed, so if you don’t have an intention that’s okay too.
The practitioner will place their hands over or on your body (many people prefer light contact, but Reiki can be done with the hands hovering several inches away from the client). The hands will be placed at various points with the intention of connecting, releasing, and moving energy. Your role is to relax and breathe. Since Reiki stimulates the "rest and digest" system in our bodies clients often fall asleep on the table. You may get more benefit in this state. Your stomach may also gurgle or growl; this is absolutely fine! You may also experience an occasional twitch or jerk in your body as the energy flows.
Everyone's response is unique. Most people feel deeply relaxed during the treatment. Some people see colors or light, some feel tingling or heat. Some people feel the practitioner's hands somewhere other than where they are at the time. Some feel waves. Some people see images and have profound dream-like experiences or experience emotions. One person may have different experiences at different times. Some don't perceive anything at all. Even if you don't sense a difference consciously it doesn't mean nothing is happening, and you may experience shifts in your life days later. Just release any expectation and don't put any pressure on yourself.
After your Reiki session you can take your time coming back to the room and getting up. I recommend drinking water and making sure to continue to hydrate for at least the rest of the day. You can share your experience if you wish. Please wait until you feel fully present and grounded before driving or operating any heavy machinery (hold off on that forklift!). I also recommend not doing any shopping right after a Reiki session. I will explain why when we meet!
